Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

Children sometimes complain about aches in their joints, which could result from a variety of causes. But if your child’s joints stay inflamed for six weeks in a row or longer, he or she may have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a long-lasting (chronic) disease.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of arthritis in children. It affects 70,000-100,000 people under age 16 in the United States. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis has several types, and all are different from rheumatoid arthritis in adults

In most cases, symptoms are mild and do not cause progressive joint disease and deformities. And while most children eventually outgrow juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, in severe cases, it can produce serious joint and tissue damage and cause problems with bone development and growth.

What happens

When you have JRA, the body attacks its own healthy cells and tissues (autoimmune disease). Arthritis results from ongoing joint inflammation in four steps:

  1. The joint becomes inflamed.

  2. The joint stiffens (contracture).

  3. The joint suffers damage.

  4. The joint’s growth is changed.

No one knows exactly what causes juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, but researchers believe some children have genes that make them more likely to get the disease. Exposure to something in the environment (i.e., a virus) triggers juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in these children. juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is not hereditary, so it is very rare for more than one child in a family to get it.

Symptoms

  1. If your child has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, his or her joints may be painful in the morning but feel better by afternoon. Sometimes the first sign is a morning limp caused by an affected knee. Hands and feet may also be affected.

  2. In addition to swelling, pain and stiffness, inflamed joints may be reddish and warm to the touch.

  3. Muscles and other soft tissues around the joint may weaken.

  4. Although young children may not complain of pain, your child may feel irritable or tired and not want to play.

  5. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis may cause lymph node swelling in the neck and other parts of the body.

  6. Some children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis often have eye involvement. The only symptom that may be present is pain during exposure to bright light.

If you think your child might have juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, see a doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment can control inflammation, relieve pain, prevent joint damage and maintain your child’s ability to function.
